Maurice Smith

The Commission selected Maurice Smith as the Director of Consumer Services effective May 4, 2015. He has served in several capacities since joining the Commission in 2008. 

Mr. Smith previously served as the Retail Choice Market Specialist, a newly created position in the Office of Consumer Services. The duties of this position include actively monitoring the activities of the retail electric, natural gas, and telecommunications suppliers/providers in the District of Columbia to ensure that customers are informed regarding the realities of the retail market, and they are aware of their rights and responsibilities under District of Columbia laws and regulations. He previously served in the same office as the Senior Consumer Specialist for approximately 5½ years. 

Mr. Smith is a native of Chicago, Illinois. He has over 25 years of experience in public utility/cable television regulation. He spent approximately eleven years with the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC). During his tenure at the ICC, he served as a Policy Advisor/Executive Assistant to two Commissioners, concentrating on issues in the telecommunications and electric industries. 

Upon leaving the ICC, Mr. Smith relocated to Washington, D.C. to accept a position with the cable television system for the District of Columbia. Over an eight-year period, he held a number of progressively responsible management positions as the Director of Government and Regulatory Affairs for Comcast. He played an active role in the renewal of the Cable Television Franchise for Comcast. 

Mr. Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Roosevelt University in Chicago and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from Loyola University of Chicago School of Law.
